The location for this year's annual conference of the Regional Studies Association is Pécs,(how to pronounce this? click here), Hungary. Pécs is also European Capital of Culture for 2010. For those unfamiliar with Capital of Culture, it is awarded to bidding cities by the European Union for a period of one year. Previous Capitals of Culture include Liverpool 2008, Sibiu 2007, Kraków 2000, Thessaloniki 1997, Lisbon 1994, Glasgow 1990 and Athens 1986 (the first one).

So, not only are we going to have a great conference but we're having it in a key cultural centre of Europe. The Pécs2010 website can be found in both Magyar and English versions. The Pécs2010 logo is shown below...

  • Capital and largest city of the Transdanubian region in South-West Hungary
  • 200km (125 miles) to the south of Budapest
  • About 35km (21 miles) from the border with Croatia

  • 'Mediterranean' style climate, despite being far from the sea!
