In anticipation of the upcoming RSA Annual Conference in Newcastle, we thought it might be a good idea to highlight Science Central, a new science and research development project on the 10.5ha site of the former Scottish and Newcastle Brewery. The proposal just received outline planning permission and will be rolled out in phases over the next 15 - 20 years.

The masterplan site includes new streets, a new city square, landmark buildings and public spaces designed to integrate the site into the city centre. The development is planned to include Newcastle University Research Institutes, Newcastle College’s new School of Applied Sciences, and start-up incubator space for businesses along with housing, student accommodation and other retail and leisure spaces.

The project aims to create up to 1,900 new jobs and bring in an estimated £255 million of private sector investment to the local economy. The project has already attracted investment in the form of a new 100,000 sq.ft Newcastle University Business School due to be completed in Autumn of 2011 and a 170 room 4* Sandman hotel due to be completed in Summer 2011.
